Expat Optimiser Coaching Program

​Contributing to the success of your expats, returning staff and your mobility program

About the Expat Optimiser Program

Whether it is long-commuting, short or long assignments, the cost of expatriation and long-distance working is significant - as are the opportunities for value as a result of the expatriate assignment.  At the same time research and the experience of many organisations tells us that the success rates of expats, especially in their 'first 90 days' is variable, and we know that turnover rates both during the assignment and within two years of returning from the assignment is equally high.  In a post-Covid world we know expatriation will still be an important element of global organisations; however there will be fewer expat assignments compared to pre-Covid times, which means organisations will have greater pressure to make sure the assignment works and generates equal value for the organisation and the expat.

This program has been designed to contribute to the success of corporate mobility programs by helping to set your expats up for success, and to ensure the returning staff member can reintegrate smoothly and effectively.  Typical areas of focus include:

Going:
  • Coaching to help expats and their partners assimilate quickly to their new surrounds
  • Developing a 1, 3 and 6 month plan to get on task with their job quickly and efficiently 
  • How to maintain a healthy sense of resilience despite the challenges that accompanies expatriation
  • Dealing with the challenges of identity and "what's next" for the partners of expats who are leaving their own career behind
  • Managing and balancing family and work needs

Returning:
  • Dealing with reverse culture shock
  • Knowing how to initiate knowledge transfer 
  • Re-establishing networks and relationships in a changed environment
  • Developing a plan for getting back on task in the new environment
  • Managing and balancing the challenges of repatriation, including family support

"I relocated from Paris, France to Brisbane, Australia in 2014. This was a career opportunity provided by my Company, a worldwide insurer, and I was ready to take on a new professional challenge.

Even so expatriation is for some synonymous to a fantastic experience by default, it comes with challenges both personal and professional, it challenges your resilience away from home, while you need to adapt to more than just to a new role.

Soon after my arrival, I started the Expat Optimiser Coaching Program led by David Morley. As the only expat at that time in my part of the company, I was provided with support to ease my adaptation into a new environment.

Supported by tools and thanks to his own experience, David helped me to manage to quickly get an understanding of differences in work culture in my host country and therefore adapt faster, then I’ve been provided support to build more relationships and, at last but not least, be coached to be better at leading a multi-cultural team.

I also personally enjoyed the range and the flexibility of the program: fully tailored-made, to be able to tackle personal situations, leadership styles and cross-cultural differences in a same session.
